How To Read Books So You Actually Remember And Use It: A Guide For Lifelong Learners

This will guarantee that you won't forget what you've learned and will be able to implement the teachings in your personal and business life.

We've all gone through the problem of remembering the concepts from the books we've read. We get so excited in that AHA! moment when we learn a relatable concept from a book and think of how impactful it will be in our own lives.

But, the moment we finish reading the book, taking all the actions we learned seems overwhelming and we end up completely neglecting it and jump straight to the next book. I've done this countless times.

This guide is for the ones who face this problem often and until you realize it, you've gone through too many books to bother revising each of them again.

Implementing these 3 ways will solve every problem mentioned and help you maximize your learning.

  • Create your own summary of the book

  • The 1-week action technique

  • When reading, look up every word and concept you don't know

Create your own summary of the book

When you finish reading a book, grab a pen and paper and write down everything you learned from that book.

Make it into points, paragraphs, and in whatever other way you like. If you've read it cover to cover and understood it properly, you'll have no issue filling at least 4-5 pages out. Make a habit of revising your summary once a week.

It has a profound effect as you're making your OWN summary; by doing that, you have clear action steps to implement it. It works wonders!

The 1-week action technique

Whenever you learn something new, challenge yourself to take action on it within the same week.

If not, don't read any further. It compels you to go out there in the real world and do it instead of just consuming it. For instance, when I read How To Win Friends And Influence People, I learned calling people out by their names is the best compliment you can give them. Within the same week, every new or an existing person I met, I called them with their names because I knew this technique.

Whichever book you're reading right now, find something that can be implemented, and commit to doing it THIS week.

When reading, look up every word and concept you don't know

This is a no-brainer but still, so many people fall into complacency and don't do this!

What's the point of reading a new book if you're not finding out concepts and words you don't know? Ditch that laziness and do it.

Remember, you're trading your time when reading books. So make sure to use the knowledge.
