One Second Decisions
Have you ever found yourself in those empowering situations where your only options are to fight or take flight?
For instance, it might be when you’re feeling burnt out from studying or pushing through intense physical activities, or when the urge of hitting that snooze button in the early mornings is almost too tempting. But remember, the time and situation demand more from you; what incredible choice are you left with at those moments?
This is where One Second Decisions come into play. You have 86,400 seconds in an entire day, and let’s say the urge not to hit the snooze was too hard for you, and you weren’t able to make that one-second decision and just by doing that you lost a minimum of hours of your day. When you’re so tired that you can’t study for a single more second, and you give up, falling into complacency, again failing to make that one-second decision.
It takes an extraordinary amount of fortitude not to let the inner dialogue of questioning win by saying, “Don’t worry, no one’s watching if you don’t swim the 400 meters left” OR "You won't get that fat if you just skip the morning gym session.” But if you surmount that inner dialogue,. then a whole new realm of life will be waiting for you on the other side
Just take a few deep breaths and envision what will “ACTUALLY” happen if you fail to make that one-second decision and how it will have a profound effect on your day-to-day life.
“Many dreams die while suffering,” says Goggins. Just think, when do you make the most crucial and significant decisions of your life, like wanting to be an ultra runner or any other strenuous task that involves giving your all and then some? It's when you’re comfortable and not filled with panic, right?
And when you’re in the heat of battle, you forget all that, and you just want to quit, and relapsing at that time might be converted into a lifetime regret. So, use this technique to your best, not letting that inner dialogue of panic and emotions take over!
Actionable steps:
Whenever faced with a challenging situation, remind yourself about the One Second Decision by maintaining mental fortitude.
Take a few big belly breaths and envision what will be the cost of quitting at this moment. Remember, you are capable of extraordinary things!
“There are 86,400 second in a day. Losing just one of those seconds can change the outcome of your day and, potentially, your life”
